The electric lights will be turned off and you can explore the castle with your flashlight and light up paintings and tapestries. It is a bit spooky but a lot of fun!

After my shift ended at 9, I checked out some other nearby Kulturnatten events with some friends! We got free passes from DIS for volunteering, which was pretty sweet. We walked through the Botanical Gardens, explored the treasury of the Rosenborg Castle, and generally enjoyed seeing Copenhagen so alive for the night.
IT’S HALLOWEEN SEASON. Fall is probably my second favorite season of the year, after the holiday season of course. (I’m such a Christmas freak that all I can think about tonight is how by the time I wake up, Idina Menzel’s holiday album will have dropped – the first holiday album of 2014!)
But I do love Halloween. I’ve had Thriller, Monster Mash, and the Rocky Horror soundtrack playing since October started, hence the title of this post. Hocus Pocus is one of my favorite movies of all time. I’m going to Transylvania next week and I am absolutely rewatching Van Helsing and Dracula before I leave. Every year, I buy myself a few jumbo bags of candy from the Halloween aisle at Duane Reade – although this year, it’ll probably end up being a few jumbo chocolate bars from 7-11 instead because almost all the candy they have here is Haribo, and I’m not a fan. I love witches (American Horror Story: Coven) and ghosts (Casper Meets Wendy) and lots of things having to do with darkness and magic and fantasy in general (Buffy the Vampire Slayer). The point being… I love this holiday.
Last Friday, I volunteered for DIS’s Kulturnatten event. Kulturnatten, or Culture Night, is an annual event in Copenhagen that gives people free access to special cultural events all over the city for just one night. You have to buy a badge, but it’s not very expensive, and hundreds of musueums, churches, art galleries, and organizations open their doors or host fun events.
For Kulturnatten, DIS hosted a Halloween event! It featured a haunted house, American candy bags (be still my heart, Skittles from home!), apple cider, face painting, and even a makeshift pumpkin patch! Some of my friends got fake-bloodied up so they could scare people who went through the haunted house, and I helped carve pumpkins! I spent the evening covered in pumpkin guts, listening to the screams of terrified haunted house-goers, and sipping hot cider by the fire they’d built for people to roast s’mores on.
perks of being in an American study abroad program – we celebrate Halloween properly!

I knew Tivoli would have a Halloween season, but aside from that, I didn’t expect to properly celebrate Halloween here in Denmark at all! Growing up, I had the best times with my friends going through the terrifying mazes at Hollywood Horror Nights and Queen Mary. My sister Catherine was born in October, and she used to have pumpkin carving birthday parties. The haunted house, the smell of the delightfully gruesome pumpkin guts, the light from the jack-o-lanterns we slaved over, and the weird decorations hanging all around me… it really took me back home for a night. I had a wonderful time volunteering.
a Dane carved ‘MURICA into a pumpkin… I feel it though

We walked through the Botanical Gardens, explored the treasury of the Rosenborg Castle, and generally enjoyed seeing Copenhagen so alive for the night. So many people and families came out and there were so many things to do and see – I haven’t seen the streets so crowded since I’ve been here! I don’t know how native Danes feel about it, but it reminded me of New York, so I loved it.
