Although limit hold’em is used in all of the mixed game variations at the World Series of Poker, there were only two events on the schedule that made limit hold’em the sole focus. The $10,000 buy-in event is usually the highlight of the series for limit specialists, but running alongside the inaugural monster stack event meant a smaller than normal field.
Just 122 players entered the event, creating a total prize pool of $1,146,800. After three days of play, the win went to 27-year-old Detroit native David Olson. The $303,909 payday was the largest score of Olson’s career and coincided with his first gold WSOP bracelet.
“I actually flew in to play in the monster [stack] tournament,” Olson said. “I wasn’t going to play this, but my friends talked me into it. I’m glad I did. It was a last minute thing.”
Olson defeated a final table that included notables such as Gabriel Nassif (9th), Jan Sjavik (8th), Brian Tate (7th), Bill Chen (6th), Greg DeBora (3rd) and Mikhail Tulchinskiy (2nd).
Other players who cashed in the event included Steven Wolansky (12th), Kenny Shei (16th) and David Chiu (17th).
