Marlene Dietrich declared Baden-Baden casino in Germany “the most beautiful casino in the world” and I might just have to agree.
Casinos in Germany are very different to those found in Las Vegas- while Sin City is loud, proud and in-your-face, the casino in Baden-Baden is a much more classy and altogether more refined affair. There are no neon lights and showgirls here. Instead you’ll find decadent red interiors and sparkling chandeliers. Since Baden-Baden is close to the French border, the interior design of the casino was very much influenced by Palace of Versailles and the grand French palaces of the day.
In the 19th century the casino became the playground of nobles and the elite; since gambling was banned in France, the French hopped across the border to the spa town of Baden-Baden, where they bathed in the nearby bath houses and indulged in the game of chance. Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky won a fotune in Wiesbaden but it all at the tables of the Baden-Baden casino; his novel “The Gambler” was inspired by these events. These days the clientele consists mainly of tourists and a more ‘normal’ middle-class crowd, but it still retains an aristocratic elegance. Many people come from all over the world like Canada, the UK and New Zealand to take their chances. If you don’t find luck at the casino tables you can always try your hand at online blackjack in New Zealand casinos from the comfort of your room. What you miss in ambiance you gain in comfort and convenience.
As I gaze into one of the many mirrors adorning the walls, I half expect James Bond to appear behing me in a tuxedo ordering a Martini “shaken not stirred”. But this is the early morning, when the casino is open for public tours. Unlike online casinos in Germany, which are open 24/7, the casino is closed to gamblers at this time meaning the tables are empty and it feels like I’m walking through a museum. At 14:00 in the afternoon the casino will open and the first gamblers will start to arrive, but for now, all is quiet.
